How can we make our drawings more realistic by getting accurate scale and  proportion?

ASSIGNMENT PART A:

Scale is the relative size of one object to another.

Proportion refers to the size of parts in relation to other parts of the same object.

We can use a technique called Sighting to determine the relationship of parts of a form to one another and of the parts to the whole.

In your sketchbook title a page "Scale + Proportion"

Write a definition for each.

Practice sketching and shading the arrangement of forms using the sighting technique.

You may use an Ebony pencil or the Graded set of graphite pencils for this drawing - but for the initial placement of forms use an H with a light touch.

  • Your object of origin should be drawn on your sketch page first and be about the size of your fist. Draw lightly at first. You will be drawing ALL of the objects you see and only what you see.

  • Make sure your objects occupy most of the space of the paper. You want space underneath for cast shadows so none of your objects should be resting on the bottom of the page.

  • Determine where the tops and bottoms of objects are in relation to your object of origin - mark them lightly.

  • Sketch in the contours of the objects lightly and then check the shapes of the negative spaces between and around objects for accuracy.

  • MAKE ANY NEEDED ADJUSTMENTS BEFORE BEGINNING SHADING!

  • Determine your light source - and reserve white areas of paper for strongest highlights.

Assignment Part B: Shade the forms. Refer back to your sketchbook notes to review what you did well yesterday with shading practice and a goal you set for yourself today.

Remember to:

____ Start loosely - hold pencil to side, move from shoulder

____ Gradually and smoothly vary the pressure on our pencil to create a range of values

____ Evenly shade the form with consistent strokes following the contour of the form

____ Capture the primary highlight (white of paper, midtones, core shadow, cast shadow and reflected light.

____ Include table or paper edge, surrounding space values, note that cast shadows have multiple values.
