What is positive + negative space and how can paying attention to it improve our drawing?

Assignment Part A :

​

  1. Title a page in your sketchbook "Positive + Negative Space" Write a definition for each. 

Seeing the negative space as shapes and gauging them in relation to each other can improve the proportions and accuracy of your drawing.

​

​    2. Follow the instructions to draw the negative spaces  on both of the following handouts Exercise 1 and Exercise 2. Tape into your sketchbook.

  1. Watch the video Draw Tip Tuesday : How To Negative Spaces

  2. Arrange a pair of scissors on top of a white piece of paper. Draw the scissors to scale in your sketchbook as demonstrated in the video.

The goal of learning to “see” and record negative space is to improve your drawing skills of three-dimensional objects in the real world. Perception of negative space will improve the accuracy of your drawings.

Assignment Part C: Reflect

On the "positive + negative space" page of your sketchbook, write a brief summary of your understanding of the relationship of positive and negative space and how perceiving and drawing negative space helps improve you'r drawing. 

Were you able to see negative spaces as their own shapes?

Were you able to gauge the placement and size of the negative spaces?

Did seeing the relationship of the negative spaces to each other improve your drawings accuracy in terms of proportion?
