How can we accurately draw spaces to create a sense of depth?

Assignment Day 1:
1. In class - view the one point perspective PowerPoint.
2. In your sketchbook practice drawing cubes below, at and above the horizon line in one point perspective.

Assignment Day 2:
In your sketchbook practice drawing 1 Point Perspective Complex Forms by following along with the handout below.

Assignment Day 3:

1. Consider:

What is different about these two drawings? What is the same?

Screenshot 2024-08-26 at 7.54.16 PM.png

Two point perspective is used when none of the structure's sides is parallel to your picture plain. In other words - you are facing a corner of a building, not a side. In this case, you have two vanishing points on the horizon.

Screenshot 2024-08-26 at 7.58.17 PM.png

Sometimes a vanishing point is outside the visible picture plane, like the example. on the right.

2. In class practice: Draw cubes at, above and below the horizon line utilizing two point perspective.  Always start with the vertical corner edge closest to you.

3. Try this exercise - Finish the diagram below as illustrated to
practice drawing stairs in 2 pt perspective.

Assignment Day 4: Introduction of Perspective Project: Design your Dream City  Demonstrate your two point perspective skills by designing a city scape.

1. View the Design Challenge PowerPoint: Draw a City in Two Point Perspective.
Review the examples and design constraints.

2. Conduct some initial research/ sketch a design idea in your sketchbook.

  • Research on your computer with image searches like: 2-point perspective city, 2-point perspective village, etc. If there is a time period or architectural style you're interested in, try adding that to your search.

  • Sketch the basic layout of your cityscape in your sketchbook today.

  • Sketch must include 5 or more building forms + sidewalks. (adding more details to your planning sketch is optional)

Assignment Day 5:

1. Review Design Criteria - Does your sketch have a plan for the following?

Your drawing should include at least:

•Intersection of 2 streets with sidewalks

  •Five buildings

All buildings should have windows and doors

•Include 3 special features (people, trees, a fountain, vehicle, signs with         words or graphics etc.) of your choice

2. Review Additional Rubric Criteria

  • 2-point Perspective Accuracy

Horizon line (eye level) with two vanishing points are accurately implied;         accurate technical drawing using perspective-vertical lines of cubic forms are     truly vertical; orthogonal lines are accurately drawn to VPs.

  • All details related to a consistent implied human size. Objects accurately change in scale as they recede; spaces between objects become smaller as they recede.

  • Lines are straight and controlled. Any shaded/colored areas are smooth, consistent and blended. Lines were drawn light enough to erase without “ghost lines.” Eraser was used to erase or minimize stray marks. Paper is flat and free of bends, tears, and smudges.

3. On a 12" x 18" drawing paper, lightly lay out your horizon line and vanishing points. Remember to draw lightly so you can easily erase - ruler number side down. Begin laying out your scene starting with the corner edge of the central building and working out from there.

Assignment Day 6: Peer Critique

Critique

Write your name as the Artist on your rubric.
Place the rubric along with your sketchbook open to the cityscape sketch (for reference) at your seat.

Take a pencil and move to your assigned partner's seat.  Write your name as Critique Partner.

Consider each point of the rubric as you look at the drawing.
Provide KIND, HELPFUL + SPECIFIC Yellow hat and Green hat feedback.
Assign a point value

Reflect
When both you and your partner are finished, return to your seats and read the feedback. Ask any clarifying questions.
At the bottom of the form, write a takeaway from the critique - inspirations / appreciations; any plans for revisions or improvements.

Assignment Part 7: Reflect + Share

ASSIGNMENT:

Open a blank powerpoint. 2 Slides only!

Slide 1 is an image of your drawing only.Change the background color to black

PHOTO TIPS: try to frame your drawing so that you don't see anything but the drawing, avoid shadows on the image- zoom in vs. leaning in. Aim for an even padding of black border all the way around the image.

Slide 2 is a reflection.

Title: Drawing in Perspective (If you want you can change the background color to black and use white text.)

Write a paragraph describing a skill/technique or concept you learned or improved through making this drawing. Revisit your learning goals you made for yourself - did this project help progress you torward those goals? If so, include a sentence about that. You can also refer back to your feedback from the peer critique - did you make any revisions based on that input?

Include at least 3 vocabulary terms in the description. This is worth points on the project rubric. You can also utilize elements and principles of art describe the choices you made in designing your cityscape.

VOCABULARY: horizon line.   vanishing point.  perspective.

Upload your 2 point perspective drawing to TWO POINT PERSPECTIVE CITYSCAPE PADLET GALLERY under your period section:

Make sure you are logged in so that your name appears as the author - or make sure your name is on the last slide after your narrative.

Example of student reflection.
Is it clear what this student learned?
Do you see vocabulary terms specific to this project?
Do you see art elements and principles of design utilized to describe the design choices this student made?

You can use these questions to have a partner review and critique your narrative.
