HOW CAN CONTOUR LINE LEAD INTO ABSTRACTION?

Modified Contour Line Drawing -

Today we start Modified Contour line drawing. Similar to blind contour line,

but occasionally glancing at your paper.

The focus is still on training your hand to follow your eye. We will do a series of drawings this week and then select one to develop into a finished abstract piece by adding color and texture via collage and mixed media.

ARTISTIC VOCABULARY

ASSIGNMENT PART A

TAKE NOTES IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK:

  • Abstract art: art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures. Can reference a realistic subject but does not seek to imitate it exactly.

  • Collage:is an art form which is made up of overlapping pieces of paper or other materials. These might include drawings, photographs, colored and textured papers, fabric, or other forms of mixed media.

  • The process of collage focuses on the act of selecting materials, cutting or tearing them into the desired shape, and then arranging them. Collages are arranged for visual interest and generally designed to communicate a message or feeling.

  • Media: the physical materials used to create an artwork: examples include but are not limited to graphite, acrylic paint, oil paint, watercolor paint, oil pastel, charcoal, colored pencil, clay, wood, cement, plastic, fabric, yarn, metal, etc.

  • Mixed media: combining one or more media to create a work of art.

ASSIGNMENT PART A CONTINUED:

DESIGN PROCESS STEPS

Start by making a PLAN in your sketchbook.

Go through images you've created so far.

PLAN / CONSIDER:

  • Which drawings have interesting elements - perhaps some identifiable features, an interesting gesture or sensitive line. Is there one you want to work with as base, or are there two or more you might consider combining?

  • Do you have a theme, concept or idea you want to elaborate on? You may just choose to play with color and texture to convey a feeling or mood, or you may add other visual elements - magazine clippings, patterned or textured papers, optional limited text (a powerful word or two, or a simple passage), etc. Consider any other of the drawings you have done including still life that you might want to include. Consider how the colors and patterns impact the mood of the piece. You can experiment with this in your sketchbook.

  • Your piece should include 3 or more cut/torn contour drawings (or parts of drawings) from the past weeks. It must also include a minimum of 2 other cut/torn collage papers AND at least one additional drawing media

  • ALL IMAGERY MUST BE SCHOOL APPROPRIATE.

  • You may use the following media: magazine imagery, pencil, colored pencil, marker, oil pastel, colored/textured/patterned paper, newspaper, found paper, borrowed elements of existing imagery - â€‹â€‹Artvee is an example of a website that has public domain paintings, posters and illustrations - even though they are public domain, you want to be careful to only utilize parts or pieces from borrowed imagery and integrate it into your own work giving it new context.

  • Use bristol board or heavy weight paper as your base, or something you provide (a piece of wood, or some other base on which to collage). SIZE REQUIREMENTS ARE at least one piece MINIMUM 8" x 8" or 8" x 10".

  • Consider composition.  Images should fill the space in a way that considers visual balance and mood. You will try variations of your composition before gluing anything down.

TODAY : SELECT THE CONTOUR LINE DRAWINGS YOU WOULD LIKE TO USE.

Go through your drawings. Choose your favorite 5 that you'd most like to include in your collage. (At least 3 required in final collage). Choose ONE as your primary image. If you have a favorite drawing that is small, but you would like to enlarge it, give to Ms. Montgomery to enlarge on the copier.

Tear around each contour drawing. Carefully guide and control your tears; tearing paper is almost a sculptural process. You don't want to ruin a drawing by carelessly tearing through it.

You will have the opportunity to cut more with scissors later, but the rough edges of torn paper can integrate well into a collage. Save your drawings in your pouch; recycle the scraps.

ASSIGNMENT PART B: CREATE / PROTOTYPE

GOAL: Create a collage that communicates a feeling or idea and incorporates cut/torn contour drawings.

Requirements:

  • Include 3 or more contour line drawings torn or cut; drawings should show a strong contour line drawing process

  • Additional paper collage components - multiple colors, values, and/or patterned collage elements that work in harmony, arranged overlapping (not just side-by-side), with at least 75% coverage of the background

  • Overall balanced composition - Work towards balanced visual weight across the collage. In your reflection you'll need to identify & describe 2 Elements and 2 Principles that are dominant in your finished collage.

  • A suggested mood, theme, or concept that brings all of the collaged components together into a unified work of art.

  • Strong craftsmanship. This includes careful and controlled edge tears/cuts, securely glued down edges of all pieces, finished edge of the overall piece. (Edge of art piece may be uneven or jagged if deliberate and in keeping with the overall design).

Optional:

Additional drawn elements, such as additional contour drawing or symbols that connect and move the eye through the collage. May use sharpie, oil pastel or other media.

Collect Materials

  • ALL IMAGERY MUST BE SCHOOL APPROPRIATE.

  • You may use the following media: magazine imagery, pencil, colored pencil, marker, oil pastel, colored/textured/patterned paper, newspaper, found paper, borrowed elements of existing imagery - â€‹â€‹Artvee is an example of a website that has public domain paintings, posters and illustrations - even though they are public domain, you want to be careful to only utilize parts or pieces from borrowed imagery and integrate it into your own work giving it new context.

Experiment with Composition

  • Begin arranging contour imagery and collage elements - PLAY! Move things around, consider adding / deleting elements

  • Begin to collect collage papers, patterns, images, large text words, etc.

  • Tear and cut collage elements and arrange

  • Plan and sketch your composition today. You may use tiny bits of blue tape to hold collage pieces in place prior to gluing.

  • Save your drawings and materials with a paperclip in your table folder; recycle the scraps.

  • DO NOT GLUE ANYTHING DOWN YET.

ASSIGNMENT PART C : EVALUATE / IMPROVE / CRITIQUE

Arrange your proposed composition -  Take a few moment to jot dot down on your post it note the following as the artist to share:

ARTIST: What Mood are you trying to convey? What 2 elements and 2 principles contribute to the mood and composition?

Each artist shares (2 min)

CRITIQUE PARTNERS (4 min)

Share Yellow hat feedback: How is your table mate meeting the goals of the project?

How are they meeting their own goals/ intentions for mood? Do you have any Green Hat feedback: What if? Have you considered?

Artists: Reflect on your feedback.

CREATE

Begin executing your piece.

  • Arrange and glue only the background portions of your collage. Careful with your gluing process, all edges should be thoroughly glued down. Craftsmanship counts!

  • Arrange your top layer pieces. You may glue your top layer today if you have time. Or save this step for the next class period.

ASSIGNMENT PART D : REFLECT

Create a 2 slide powerpoint.

Slide 1: Scan your finished piece and post to the first slide. (Scan to Email, Paper - to fit, DPI 600)

Slide 2: Write a paragraph reflection in narrative form including the following:

  • Description of the purpose and value of the blind and modified contour line exercises (Drawing what you see, training your hand to record what you see in order to keep your attention on your subject)

  • Description of the process of making these drawings - guidelines you learned (don't look at paper - focus on subject , or glancing at paper, one continuous line, eye following contour edges and hand recording observation, shifting mindset away from symbols and toward observation of subject by not labeling but focusing on edges, etc)

  • Utilize appropriate terminology you learned - contour line, abstract, pencil pressure for line weight /sensitivity, collage, mixed media.

  • Describe the mood or feeling you were trying to convey in your abstract art and why you chose the images you did.  Describe how you utilized 2 elements of art and 2 principles of design.

  • Any other learning or growth you experienced - challenges, how you overcame challenges, surprises, discoveries.
